Troubleshooting Power BI User Permissions

If your Power BI workspaces or reports aren’t appearing when connecting Power BI to Spinify, it’s usually due to missing permissions or licensing. This guide explains how to configure the required permissions so the Spinify Power BI integration can connect successfully.

Required Permissions

The Spinify Power BI integration requires the following Microsoft Graph and Power BI Service permissions:

Microsoft Graph

  • offline_access

Power BI Service

  • Dataset.Read.All

  • Report.Read.All

  • Group.Read.All

The Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) user connecting the integration must have permission to grant consent for these scopes.

Option 1: Granting Admin Consent (Recommended)

The easiest and most reliable way to connect the Spinify Power BI app is to have an administrator grant consent on behalf of all users in your organization.

This ensures that the required permissions are available to anyone who needs to use the Spinify integration without requiring individual consent.

To grant admin consent:

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center with an administrator account.

  2. Navigate to Enterprise ApplicationsSpinify Power BI App.

  3. Under Permissions, review the listed permissions:

    • Microsoft Graph – offline_access

    • Power BI Service – Dataset.Read.All, Report.Read.All, Group.Read.All

  4. Select Grant admin consent for [Your Organization].

  5. Confirm the consent request.

For detailed instructions, refer to Microsoft’s documentation:
🔗 Grant admin consent to an app in Microsoft Entra ID

Once admin consent has been granted, users will be able to connect Power BI to Spinify without further approval.

Option 2: Allowing User Consent (If Admin Consent Isn’t Feasible)

If your organization doesn’t allow tenant-wide admin consent, you can configure per-user consent instead.

The Entra ID user connecting the integration must have permission to grant consent for themselves. This is controlled through the managePermissionGrantsForSelf permission.

If users don’t have this permission, an Entra ID administrator can create an App Consent Policy that allows them to grant consent for the Spinify Power BI app only.

To configure a consent policy:

  1. Create an App Consent Policy that allows users to grant consent for specific permissions required by Spinify.

  2. Apply the policy to the relevant users or groups.

  3. Have the user reconnect the Spinify Power BI integration to grant consent under the new policy.

For setup details, see Microsoft’s documentation:
🔗 Create and manage app consent policies in Microsoft Entra ID

Checking Power BI Access and Licensing

If you can connect but your Power BI workspace doesn’t appear in Spinify:

  1. Verify licensing – Ensure the connecting user has a valid Power BI license (Pro or access to a Premium workspace).

  2. Confirm workspace access – The user must have permission to view the workspace and its reports.

  3. Review sharing settings – Make sure the workspace is shared or visible to the connecting user.

Once the correct license and permissions are in place, the workspace should appear when reconnecting the integration.

Exporting Reports for Spinify Competitions

After connecting Power BI to Spinify:

  1. Export your report as a CSV file once to confirm the correct email and score column names.

  2. Use those columns when creating competitions in Spinify to ensure accurate scoring and updates.

Summary

To ensure a successful Power BI connection with Spinify:

  • Grant admin consent for the Spinify Power BI app (recommended).

  • If admin consent isn’t possible, configure per-user consent via an App Consent Policy.

  • Verify the connecting user’s Power BI license and workspace access.

  • Export the report once before using it in Spinify competitions.
